Does a ukulele bass need an amp?

Many bass ukuleles are hollow bodied electro-acoustic instruments, meaning that they produce a sound without amplification, but also have electronics which allow them to be amplified.  As a rule, to play alongside other instruments, amplification is required. However, the acoustic sound volume is affected by several things, including the tension of the strings and the size of the instrument body. Buzzards Field bass ukulele conversion kits allow a small classical guitar to be converted to bass uke - thus, with a larger body and slightly higher string tension than, say a Kala u-bass, a greater acoustic volume is achieved.
